Big Loud RecordsJake Owen’s new single takes both its melody and its inspiration from John Mellencamp’s 1982 classic, “Jack & Diane.”

Before he committed to putting out “I Was Jack (You Were Diane),” Jake made sure he had the legendary rocker’s blessing.

“The most important thing to me and my team is that we sent the song to Mellencamp,” Jake says, “and he digs the track. Getting his stamp of approval sealed the deal for me that this song should be our debut single.”

Jake’s new tune is just the latest country song to tip its hat to the American rocker from the heartland — and it’s a formula that seems to be working. Both Keith Urban’s “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” and Old Dominion’s “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” went to #1.

“I Was Jack (You Were Diane)” is Jake’s first release for Big Loud Records, after leaving his longtime home at RCA. Both the new single and another track, “Something to Ride To,” are available to stream or download now.

Tickets go on sale Friday for Jake’s Life’s Whatcha Make It Tour. Chris Janson and Jordan Davis will join him on the trek.
