Image Courtesy Mercury NashvilleKacey Musgraves admits it wasn’t easy picking the lead single from her upcoming sophomore album, Pageant Material. She made a really big impression with her debut project, Same Trailer Different Park, which produced the CMA Song of the Year, “Follow Your Arrow.” That song was Kacey’s last single released to country radio back in October 2013, so there was a lot riding on the new single choice.

Says Kacey, “I feel like it’d been a while since I’d said anything and I’ve been one to put out weighty messages or whatever; every song has a message. So, I was like, ‘What am I gonna say next?'”

Though there are many potential singles included on Pageant Material, Kacey ultimately chose “Biscuits” to introduce fans to the project. The lyrics take a lighthearted approach to putting nosy, judgmental people in their place.

“I just felt like ‘Biscuits’ was really right,” Kacey says of the single choice. “Mostly, it was upbeat. It was fun and just plain country, and it just made no excuses for itself in that way. And I just thought it would be a fun way to start off the record.”

Kacey’s new album, Pageant Material, is due out June 23.
