Sugar HillLee Ann Womack will perform “I Hope You Dance” at Maya Angelou’s funeral Saturday. Angelou was a big country music fan, and the 2000 hit “I Hope You Dance” was her favorite song. The poet and author gave Lee Ann high praise about the song when they met one time in Chicago.

Lee Ann tells Rolling Stone, “I was honored, moved and thrilled about everything she said to me about the song and my singing. But all these years later, the song remained? That says so much about the power of music and poetry: the way the human condition can be filtered down in a song.”

Lee Ann will perform “I Hope You Dance” with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for Maya Angelou’s funeral Saturday at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
