There are 33 Americans still in the running to be the first pioneers to live (and die) on Mars.

The applicants started with 200,000 and then the Mars One crew in Denmark took it down to 50 men and 50 women, 33 of which are from the US. From this list only 4 US citizens will be chosen and sent to Mars in 2025.

The US finalists range in age from 19 to 60 and are from all walks of life – from scientists to artists. They are not all single, either – one is a married father of five.

The common thread among them: they love adventure and have a deep interest in space, which is good since they’d have to be stuck in the middle of it for the rest of their life.
