Atlantic RecordsThere’s new music on the way next March from Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, Chris Stapleton and more, thanks to a new concept album, Southern Family, from Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb. He’s the force behind Stapleton’s breakthrough Traveller project, having already picked up a CMA Award this year for his efforts.

Southern Family includes Miranda’s version of the gospel classic “Sweet By and By,” as well as Morgane Stapleton’s take on the country standard “You Are My Sunshine,” accompanied by her CMA-winning husband — as well as ten original tunes.

Cobb says he initially laughed when he was approached with the notion of doing a concept album, but then he couldn’t shake the idea.

“I thought, man, wouldn’t it be amazing to have all my friends on one record and really find a common thread?” he recalls, going on to explain his vision. “Southern Family, about their mothers, grandparents, kids, siblings, these detailed stories about how they grew up and their families and the things that make them who they are.”

Recorded this fall, the album also serves as a snapshot of Music City at this point in time, according to Cobb. “This really encapsulates Nashville right now. There’s something to it. There’s something in the air. There’s a lot of great things about Nashville. There’s something here that doesn’t exist anywhere else in my lifetime. I’m sure this happened in London in the ‘60s and California in the ‘70s and maybe New York in the late ’50s or early ‘60s. But I think, right now, Nashville is the home of music,” he says.

A nominee for Producer, Album, Best Country Album and Best Americana Album, Cobb has the chance to walk away with four trophies at the February 15 Grammys. Southern Family comes out March 18.
