ABC/Randy HolmesThomas Rhett will perform his multi-week number one and Song of the Year nominee “Die a Happy Man” on Sunday night’s Academy of Country Music Awards. He admits, however, that the song’s tremendous success does make him a tiny bit uneasy.
“Man, you know, the word ‘career song’ really makes me nervous, ’cause it feels like everything else from here on out is downhill,” he laughs. “It really is amazing to know that a song that I wrote about my wife and that probably is the slowest song on the radio was the biggest song of my career. I never in a million years would’ve thought a love ballad would have been that big for me,” he confesses.
Whether Thomas takes home the Song trophy or not, it seems he’s a shoo-in for Husband of the Year. He gives much of the credit for the song’s popularity to his wife Lauren, who also appeared in the video with him.
“For the song to have gone number one was a huge blessing and an honor for me, but to watch it sit there week after week after week was just like, ‘What in the world is happening?’ Like, ‘Why do people like this song so much?’ And I think it’s because there are so many young women that look up to my wife,” he muses.
Thomas goes on to explain he’s witnessed how country fans are inspired by the relationship that gave life to the song.
“At my shows sometimes, girls will come through meet-and-greet and be like, ‘Hey, after this picture is it cool if you step out and I get a picture with just your wife?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know, why not?’ And I think just our marriage, people kinda just look at it and they’re like, ‘I believe that.’ And I think that’s why ‘Die a Happy Man’ was as successful as it was.”
