A Florida man was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash along U.S. Highway 77 in Geary County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:13 a.m. on May 25 near mile marker 157.9, close to the intersection of U.S. 77 and Old Milford Road. Authorities say a 2020 Ford Fusion was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it veered into the east ditch, continued moving forward, and struck a tree. The vehicle then caught fire as a result of the impact.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Richard B. Roberts of Sebring, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
