JUNCTION CITY — A Geary County airport is hoping to achieve new heights with federal resources.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican, announced to local officials on Friday a $4,038,000 grant to support Freeman Field in Junction City. The funding is part of more than $26 million to repairs and safety improvements at six regional airports around the state, included in a five-bill appropriations package approved by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump earlier this month.

Moran, who chairs the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation, Space and Innovation, said airports are among the most difficult things to get citizens and officials to decide where money should be spent, because it has an image of being something that’s a “plaything” or it doesn’t have general value to people who don’t have an airplane.
