Hundreds drove to Pottawatomie County’s town of Flush for the annual St. Joseph’s Catholic Church chicken dinner.
St. Joseph’s normally holds the picnic on the last Wednesday of July every year, featuring activities such as raffles, bingo, and children’s games, as well as the Knights of Columbus hamburger stand. This year’s observation was changed to a drive-thru style event to avoid mass gatherings.
KMAN spoke with Scott Haverkamp about the event, and how long the Flush Picnic has been held.
Organizers anticipated about 600 orders, however St. Joseph’s Catholic Church served 1,140 chicken dinners.
KMAN also spoke with Brenda Heptig who has been involved with the picnic for roughly 15 years. Heptig mentioned the downside to having transitioned to a drive-thru style event this year.
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church served food from 4pm to 7pm, and all proceeds went directly to help church operations — which have been limited as a result of COVID-19.
