The AUSA conference got started Monday with a “superb opening ceremony” according to retired Brigadier General Phil Mattox, who serves as President of Ft. Riley’s AUSA. Mattox indicates the ceremony included a small bit of history of the Army, with opening remarks of  General Carter Ham, National AUSA President,  former Commander of 1st Infantry Division and Secretary of the Army Honorable Eric Fanning.

Mattox indicates Flint Hills area representatives of about 50 appreciated the remarks about Army readiness today and tomorrow.   Those attending are from Junction City and Manhattan city government, area Chambers of Commerce, K-State and area corporations with “frank budget discussions” with the Honorable John Conger,   Principal Deputy under Secretary of the Army (Comptroller).   Conger shared his thoughts on the budget and said he does not believe Congress will be able to hammer one out by December. Conger provides oversight of the Army budget of over $500 million. Mattox indicates Conger, while working for Former Congressman  of Texas Chet Edwards, assisted Ft. Riley in getting funds for the new Irwin Hospital which has its ribbon cutting on Oct 12th.

Monday night featured an AUSA Presidential reception with General Ham and the Chief of Staff Of the Army General Mark Milley.

Tuesday, the delegation is meeting with U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, and U.S. Representatives Lynn Jenkins and Tim Huelskamp.
