Rape arrest by RCPD Saturday

A 26-year-old Manhattan man faces several charges including rape following an arrest Saturday afternoon. Sangla Maurice Stevens was taken into custody shortly before two p.m. on charges of rape, aggravated battery, criminal threat, domestic battery, criminal restraint, and probation violation. Road closure and accident on 177

Northbound/southbound K-177 at Scenic Overlook/Tutsbury Road in Riley County was closed at 5 p.m. Friday due to a bike/vehicle  crash. Motorists are asked to detour via US-24, K-99 & I-70 until further notice. Kimberly Qualls with the Kansas Department of Transportation indicates a notice will be sent out when the roadway is reopened to traffic.

RCPD report 3/18/16

A Manhattan man faces a rape charge following his arrest earlier this week. Grass fire causes structure damage

The rain is likely welcome after a grass fire Thursday evening caused quite a bit of damage in the 11 hundred block of Anderson Avenue. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the fire started when the hose on a pump quit while Brad White was conducting a planned burn at about  6 p.m.

Wamego School Superintendent resigns

Wamego’s USD 320 Superintendent Denise O’Dea has resigned her position–and will be taking over as Superintendent of Washington County Schools’ USD 108. Day’s resignation is effective June 30th. She has served nearly five years in the Wamego position. O’Dea indicated she wanted the opportunity to seve in a district in which her rancher husband lives.

Sentence in DUI aggravated battery case

A Silver Lake man was sentenced Thursday to eight months with the Department of Corrections but granted immediate probation for 18 months in connection with an aggravated battery while DUI case from October of 2014.
