With summer activities in full swing, blood donations often decline, creating an ever greater need for donors.

To help fight this shortage, the Red Cross is hosting their 19th annual Battle of the Badges blood drive, where local first responders compete to see who can recruit the most donors.

RCPD, Riley County EMS, and the Manhattan Fire Department will gather at St. Thomas More and encourage donors to vote for their department.

Red Cross spokesperson Kristi Ingalls explained why this event is so beneficial at this time of year.

      need for donors

Ingalls also said that understanding the process of donating can help encourage people who are hesitant to do so.

Ingalls also added that the atmosphere is always fun and light-hearted, which can make the donation easier for some individuals as well.

RCPD Captain Josh Kyle said that while the competition can get pretty intense, all of the teams have the same goal at the end of the day.

      helping others

Manhattan Fire Department Captain Gregg Van De Creek said that one of the best parts is seeing the community come together to help.
