ABC/Image Group LA As season 10 of The Voice premieres tonight on NBC, it’s pretty well a given that the singing competition is a surefire hit. But coach Blake Shelton recalls when it wasn’t such a sure thing.

“I remember season one and just getting to know Adam [Levine] and Christina [Aguilera] and CeeLo [Green] at the time. I remember having conversations with those three, saying, ‘Hey, this show is ridiculous.’ Like, ‘Is this going to work? I mean these big red chairs and buttons. What is this? What’s going on here?’ you know. And as we got into the show though, we realized how much fun it was making it, so I think we all kinda had a feeling by the time it started to air, the blind auditions, what we’d just experienced — there was no way people weren’t going to love what just happened.”

While Blake says he’s not shocked the show has lasted for ten seasons, he admits he is a little surprised he’s still around.

“I gotta say, I’m not surprised that, here we are talking about season 10, but I’m a little bit surprised that here I am still on this show ten seasons later and Adam too. You know the two of us and Carson [Daly], the three of us have never missed a season.”

You can check out Blake, Carson, Adam, Christina and Pharrell Williams as they kick off the tenth cycle of The Voice tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
