Warner Music NashvilleSince he started as a coach on The Voice, Blake Shelton has recorded duets with his co-stars Shakira and Christina Aguilera. That’s something that would have never happened prior to Blake taking the gig on The Voice. Back then, Blake only listened to country music.

“Working at The Voice, I’ve heard and been exposed to so much music,” Blake says. “So many different genres. So many sounds. So many things that I don’t like. So many things that I found out that I do like, and it’s just been a discovery for me.”

Blake’s first exposure to pop music came when he dug into fellow coach Adam Levine‘s recordings with Maroon 5.

Blake says, “[I] was getting to know this guy. I better know something about his music, and fell in love with his records.”

It turns out Blake knew several of Christina’s songs, but he didn’t know she was the one singing them.  Hearing all these sounds has shown up in Blake’s music lately, especially his recent hit, “Boys ‘Round Here.”

He explains, “I definitely think that hearing and performing some of these songs that I’ve never been exposed to, obviously, it drips into what I do, too.”

The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC.
