ABC RadioIn the wake of the #MeToo movement, Chris Janson‘s top ten hit, “Drunk Girl,” has proven to be a timely, impactful song. But Chris says the song about taking care of — and not taking advantage of — a “Drunk Girl” wasn’t written out of any sort of social consciousness: It’s simply what any dad would want for his daughter.

“We’re all fathers, you know, us three co-writers,” Chris explains. “And when we got started on it, we just wrote it from a dad’s perspective, how we would look at it, you know.”

“If our daughter were in a ‘Drunk Girl’ situation,” he continues, “we would want a young man to take great care of them with great respect and do the right thing. So the song naturally spawned out of that.”

Even more than that, the Missouri native says “Drunk Girl” came from his own moral code.

“Whether the song was ever written, ever [put] out or anything, I would’ve been living that lifestyle anyway,” Chris says. “So, it’s natural for me to sing it.”

“And I don’t know that anybody else could’ve or would’ve or wanted to sing it,” he adds, “because it’s a topic that’s not really talked about that much. Doing the right thing is doing the right thing is doing the right thing, always.”

And doing the right thing seems to have paid off for Chris: “Drunk Girl” is up for both Song and Music Video of the Year at November’s CMA Awards, and Chris is vying for the New Artist title as well.  You can see if he takes any trophies home when the show airs November 14 on ABC.
