A Manhattan man was sentenced to 59 months in the Department of Corrections for aggravated robbery charges Friday afternoon in the Riley County District Courthouse.
Jonathon Elliot, 20, made a motion of departure through his defense attorney, Brenda Jordan, and hoped for probation, but Judge David Stutzman sided with the state.
Elliot was one of the men responsible for a string of September 2015 robberies which sent the K-State campus into lockdown during that time. Elliot admitted he provided transportation and involvement with the stolen goods.
One of Elliot’s co-conspirators, 17-year-old Janir Vega was sentenced to 59 months in prison in February after reaching an agreement with prosecutors and pleading no contest. Vega’s attorney filed a motion for probation, but was denied due to evidence Vega had placed a gun to the head of one of the robbery victims.
Elliot told Stutzman he was remorseful for his involvement and said he’s been focusing on making personal changes. He has purchased a GED book while incarcerated and has completed various educational courses.
“I want to change for my future,” Elliot said.
After sentencing, Stutzman thanked Elliot for his comments and goals for self-improvement, and told him he’d still be a young man after his sentence is completed, saying there is still a chance of being a good example of personal reformation then.
Still, Stutzman told Elliot mistakes must be answered to.
“When you did jump in, you jumped in the deep end,” Stutzman said.
