A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of northeast and east-central Kansas as accumulating snow and dangerously cold temperatures are expected from Friday evening through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. Forecasters say confidence continues to increase in impactful snowfall, with two main rounds of snow likely — the first Friday night into Saturday morning, followed by a second round Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Most locations north of Interstate 70 are expected to receive between 2 and 5 inches of snow, while areas south of I-70 could see 4 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts possible if both rounds of snow impact the same areas. Officials note the snow will be light and fluffy, which may still lead to hazardous travel conditions.
In addition to the snow, very cold air will move into the region, with wind chills forecast to range from -10 to -20 degrees Friday through Sunday mornings, and potentially into Monday. A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued, and residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers and check on vulnerable populations during the prolonged cold stretch.
