Red Ant/BMGThere’s a busy weekend ahead for Granger Smith. Friday, the Texas native releases his new album, Remington, which contains his first number-one, “Backroad Song.” Then on Sunday, he embarks on his two-day Granger Smith Across Merica Pledge of Allegiance Tour, which will find him reciting the pledge in all thirteen original colonies, as well as the nation’s capital.
Transforming America to “Merica” is a tip of the hat to Granger’s alter-ego, Earl Dibbles, Jr., and one of his tracks on the new record.
“Earl was a funny, ultra-country character that represents some close family members of mine and people that we know,” he says, explaining the origins of Mr. Dibbles. “It was easy to slip into this character. We put it out, as the original video, in 2011 and it was our first million-view video and it just skyrocketed and went viral and we’ve been chasing it ever since.”
Earl takes center stage on three tracks on the new project.
“He has a song called ‘City Boy Stuck,” which is kind of the original idea of Earl, that goes even before the ‘Country Boy’ song, where he’s upset at this city boy that’s getting stuck in the mud and blocking his one lane of traffic. Then there’s a song called ‘Merica’ that we’re very excited about. Actually we haven’t even released it to anyone yet, but it’s exactly what you could imagine a song called ‘Merica’ being.”
Granger’s follow-up to the album’s chart-topping lead single is another track called “If the Boot Fits.”
