Image Group LA/ABCIf it weren’t for a bright, sunny day, Carrie Underwood‘s big hit “Smoke Break” might never have been written. At a party Tuesday at Nashville’s Sutler Saloon, co-writer Hillary Lindsey recalled how the weather conspired to bring the song together.

“Thank you to the beautiful sunny day that we had that day or we never would’ve walked outside,” she remembered, “’cause we were wanting a break. I remember sitting around her little fountain in Leiper’s Fork and we were just chilling and kinda taking a break and then Chris [DeStefano] grabbed an acoustic and we were kinda like, ‘You know what, let’s depart from that other song that we were writing and kinda jam on something new.’ So thank you God for the sunshine!”

Carrie says whether the sun is shining or not, she knows she’s always gonna have a good time when she writes with Hillary and Chris.

“This team especially is just so easy to be around,” the “Heartbeat” hitmaker says. “And even if we don’t come up with a number one smash — I had fun! And it’s just nice to be able to write with people that no matter what, you had a good day!”

Not only did Hillary Lindsey help craft Carrie’s number one from her Storyteller album, she also happens to have won the CMA award for Song of the Year for co-writing “Girl Crush” for Little Big Town. Hillary also co-wrote Carrie’s breakthrough hit, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
