Two items on the city commission meeting agenda for July 18,2017 were approved to move forward.
The first item was to consider the first reading of an ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the code of ordinances relating to city-owned cemeteries and to consider the establishment of columbarium fees and other provisions for burial plots to store urns at Sunrise Cemetery. Commissioners approved the ordinance changes, establishing the fees to be alloted to columbariums per the community’s request.

The second item was to consider approving community development block grant 2017 year program annual action plan and authorizing execution of 2017 subrecipient grant agreements and the 2017 CDBG grant contract.
According to Director of Community Development Eric Cattell, Since 2010, the City of Manhattan has been designated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Entitlement community. The Entitlement Program allows the City to access federal dollars based on an annual formula allocation in order to provide grant funding for projects that benefit low and moderate income persons and families. In order to continue participation in the CDBG program each year, the City must submit to HUD either a five-year Consolidated Plan and/or an Annual Action Plan, as appropriate, describing community needs and proposed projects and activities for the upcoming program year.

The third item on the agenda was a mid-year review and update on the 2017 city commission goals and priorities and commissioners removed the item from the agenda to discuss at a later city commission work session.
