While many are hustling and bustling this holiday season, local emergency officials are hoping people celebrate safely.

Ahead of Thanksgiving, Manhattan Fire Department Deputy Fire Marshall Ryan Courtright spoke with KMAN about being safe in the kitchen, especially if you’re plans are to fry a turkey.

Courtright encourages those planning to use a deep fryer to do so in the garage since a concrete floor is an even surface and is away from people. Fire Chief Brad Claussen explains what to do if you don’t have a garage.

After the holiday, it’s tradition for many to begin decorating their homes for Christmas. If you’re buying a tree, Claussen says there are some things you should remember.

Claussen says most tree lots will ask people if they are putting up their tree right away so they can cut a little bit of the trunk. He also had some tips on decorations.

As temperatures continue to fall this winter, there are also some precautions people should take when heating their homes, especially the use of space heaters, says Courtright.

Courtright also warned about candle use since the more are used during the holiday season, saying to keep them on non combustible surfaces. It’s also a good time to get your house checked for possible carbon monoxide poisoning issues. If you have any questions you can contact the Manhattan Fire Department at 785-587-4504.
