MANHATTAN — A Manhattan man accused of first-degree murder involving an infant child earlier this month made his first appearance in Riley County District Court Friday.
D’Khari Lyons, 23, appeared via teleconference in front of Magistrate District Judge James Kepple, who read the charges against him. Lyons has applied for a court appointed attorney. Judge Kepple stated in court it would likely be next week before an attorney would be appointed to the case.
Lyons, if convicted faces life in prison with the chance of parole. He’s also charged with felony child abuse stemming from the Nov. 8 incident involving an infant child. Riley County Police stated that the boy was found not breathing, transported to Via Christi in Manhattan, and life-flighted to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City where he died.
Lyons will appear at a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 in front of Judge Meryl Wilson. He remains jailed in Riley County on a $500,000 bond.

Riley County Police have arrested a Manhattan man connection to the death of an infant earlier this month.
According to police, 23-year-old D’Khari Lyons was arrested Thursday on a Riley County warrant for first-degree murder and abuse of a child. Lyons is currently confined in the Riley County jail on a $500,000 bond. The case has been forwarded on to the Riley County District Attorney. Lyons will make his first court appearance in Riley County at 1:30 p.m.
The infant child was transported Nov. 8 to Via Christi after a 911 call was received. Paramedics found the child not breathing and he was life-flighted to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City where he died.
