A man charged with second degree murder appeared in Riley County District Court Tuesday for a status hearing.

Erick Sanchez-Chavez, 29, of Manhattan appeared via Zoom from the Riley County Jail. He faces charges of second degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threat. Police arrested him last month following an investigation into the Dec. 6 killing of 36-year-old Mark Rickenbaker.

Sanchez-Chavez’s defense attorney, David McDonald, told Judge John McNish that he hadn’t requested or received discovery materials yet and said he’d be looking into a possible competency issue with his client.

Sanchez-Chavez is set for another status hearing Feb. 24. He remains held in the Riley County Jail on a $1 million bond.
