A 77-year-old Manhattan man searching for a new companion is now a little lighter in the wallet due to some online scammers.

Riley County Police say the man attempted on Monday morning to purchase a dog through Facebook from two people he didn’t know. The man sent the two suspects $1,200 but never received the dog.

It’s a good reminder to always be careful when dealing with transactions on social media and verify that the person you’re doing business worth is legitimate.

RCPD asks anyone with information that can help solve this or any crime to contact Crime Stoppers.
