Manhattan sales tax numbers are stronger than they’ve been in recent months, with $981,939 collected in May, which is higher than the $917,647 the same time last year and much higher than last month’s $838,056. That puts the net budget impact on the positive side for the first time since February, with a $13,551 amount for the month. However the budget is still $68,025 behind the yearly budget projections.
Manhattan Finance director Bernie Hayen says “Finally…a reasonably good sales tax month compared to a year ago for the same period.”  Hayen mentions hotels and fast food establishments appeared to play a large role in this May’s sales tax receipt increase compared to the April report.
