A Manhattan woman who admitted trying to hide fentanyl from police during a 2019 wellness check on her husband could be headed to federal prison.
At a sentencing hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Topeka, Chanel Toliver was handed a seven month prison sentence, followed by two years of probation. However, due to her asthma, a judge recommended home confinement since she’s high-risk for the coronavirus, according the Centers for Disease Control.
Toliver pleaded guilty to one felony count of removal of property to prevent seizure. She was one of 54 indicted last summer in a three-year drug trafficking investigation in the Manhattan area.
Court records show Tolliver admitted in her plea that officers with the Riley County Police Department responded March 5, 2019 to the 1000 block of Yuma Street. First responders found Terriundis Toliver unconscious and in respiratory distress. While rendering aid, Chanel Toliver was seen reaching into the man’s jeans and tried to take a small bag containing about a quarter gram of heroin and fentanyl to hide from police. At the time Terriundis Tolliver was being investigated by RCPD as a drug distributor.
RCPD reported that a 35-year-old man had died from an overdose March 5, but never directly identified the man. An online memorial indicated Terriundis Toliver died March 5, 2019 and was married to Chanel.
