Memorial Day services are planned across the area Monday.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will conduct the annual ceremony at 11:40 a.m. Monday at the Post Cemetery at 193 Huebner Road. The observance honors the men and women who died while serving our country.

Outgoing Fort Riley Garrison Commander Colonel Will McKannay will speak as part of the ceremony. He and Command Sgt. Major Speichert will place a wreath in honor of those who have died while serving in the armed forces.

The ceremony is open to the public, but those without a Department of Defense ID card are urged to arrive early at the Henry Gate visitor control center to obtain a pass to the installation.

The event will also be live streamed on the Fort Riley Facebook page.

Elsewhere, the American Legion will host its ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery. The event will be preceded by a performance from the Manhattan Municipal Band. A small luncheon will follow at 11 a.m. Free will donations are accepted.

VFW Post 1786 is hosting its Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Valley View Cemetery on East Highway 24. The guest speaker will be Mike Reilly, a retired U.S. Marine Corps captain and Vietnam veteran.  The ceremony begins Monday with a flag retirement ceremony. Prior to Monday’s event, officials will place flags at the cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday.
