People young and old had a chance to let their childlike curiosity shine through at Sunday afternoon’s open house at the Manhattan Fire Station. A crowd of families and community firefighters intermingled as Manhattan Fire Department put their equipment and skills on display.

This marks the sixth year MFD has held such an event, and Captain Micah Hydeman indicated planning and coordinating such a large day has become a routine. This year MFD was assisted by their peers in Junction City, who brought over a trailer used to simulate a child’s bedroom in a fire situation.

Hydeman says he enjoys seeing the enthusiasm of children as they climb into trucks and take their turn spraying a real hose. Hydeman was most proud to display a relatively new disaster response truck which was purchased with grant money three years ago. The sounds of fire horns, spraying hoses and laughter helped the department put a satisfying end to Fire Prevention Week.
