Authorities are investigating a case of forgery and theft by deception after a pair of local businesses reported Thursday that several forged checks were cashed at banks across the region.

The Riley County Police Department says a 44-year old male suspect altered checks appearing to be from Cat Cans Portable Services and cashed them at four separate Kansas State Bank locations in Riley, Geary and Pottawatomie counties. The estimated total loss is over $17,000.

Officers also filed a report for forgery and theft by deception listing Community First Bank and a 59-year-old man as victims when the same suspect forged a check to look like the man’s check and cashed it. The estimated total loss is approximately $3,800.

Anyone with information about theses cases can contact Crime Stoppers.
