A man charged with threatening violence to a local priest had his first taste of trial Thursday morning as the jury selection process for his trial began.

The defendant has said the matter is simply a misunderstanding of his evangelistic efforts.

Andrew Trevor Birrell, 35, of Manhattan, has elected to represent himself throughout his court appearances, though the Public Defender’s Office appointed standby counsel.
