An unidentified person died Wednesday evening after a residential fire in Junction City.

JC Fire Chief Jason Lankas released a statement Thursday, saying crews responded to the scene just before 7:30 p.m. The unidentified person is said to have been suicidal, with dispatchers informing emergency responders that they had indicated they would shoot anyone that enters the building as well as themself.

Upon arrival, smoke was coming from the structures 1st and 2nd floor eves, with fire showing from a side window. Fire crews entered the structure with the help of police armed with ballistic shields for safety. In the course of their work, they found a single deceased person on the building’s first floor.

The Kansas State Fire Marshal was contacted to investigate upon that realization, also assisting with putting out the blaze.

No other injuries were reported, and it is unknown if any other people had been in the residence prior to the fire. No additional details have been released as of Thursday afternoon.
