CMACover girl Carrie Underwood reveals how marriage and motherhood have changed her life in the latest edition of People magazine.

“I never dreamt of my wedding day and the perfect guy,” she says, reflecting back to her single days. “Then I met Mike [Fisher], and I was like ‘Wow, so now I know what I was missing.’ And the same with my son. I was never like, ‘I want kids so bad.’ And now that I have Isaiah in my life, I’m like, ‘What did I do before?’”

She also talks candidly about how the divorce of friends Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton has affected her. “It makes you want to take stock of your own marriage,” she admits. “Like, ‘What do you need? Are you happy? What can I do to make things better?’”

Though she’s known for her health and fitness regime now, Carrie also thinks back to a time after she won American Idol, when the pressure to be thin had her turning to weight loss supplements containing ephedra, now banned by the FDA.

“I knew that I weighed more than I had ever weighed before. But then as soon as you start making little tweaks, people immediately go, ‘You look so great!’ Then you start wondering, ‘How bad did I look before?’ Then it’s like, ‘Well, I should keep on going.’”

You can read more of Carrie’s interview, done at her weekend cabin in the Nashville area, when People’s new issue hits stands on Friday. Her new CD Storyteller comes out October 23.
