EB Media PRAt the end of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus announced that she was releasing a surprise album that very minute.  At tonight’s CMA Awards, Eric Church did something similar.

Backstage, a young man named McKinley James told reporters that Eric had released a brand-new album called Mr. Misunderstood free to 80,000 members of his Church Choir fan club.  The album is also in stores and on iTunes now.  Why did James make the announcement?  Because he’s pictured on the album’s cover. Eric later took the stage at the CMAs to perform the album’s title track.

In a note distributed to reporters, Eric wrote that his son named one of his guitars “Butter Bean,” and that he used the guitar to write the songs on the new album, starting late this summer.  “20 days later, I had 18 songs.  20 days following that, I had 10 recorded.  That was 30 days ago. It always takes me time to look for inspiration to make a new album but this time, inspiration came looking for me. Together, we found Mr. Misunderstood. Today, it’s yours.”

The fan club received the new album on Tuesday.
