ABC/Image Group LAYou can expect new music from Kenny Chesney this spring, and for the superstar from East Tennessee, it all started by taking a little break after his last album and tour.
“You have to take time to live and breathe, to fill up your tanks to be creative. Otherwise, you’re just on a treadmill churning out what you’ve already done… Who needs that?” he asks. “For me, especially after the success of The Big Revival, I want to move the music, the songs, the discussion forward!”
After charging his batteries, Kenny started searching for new songs and co-writers — in Austin, Texas, in the islands, and on the road. So far, what he’s found is a collection of tunes from the likes of “Dust on the Bottle” hitmaker David Lee Murphy, “You and Tequila” composer Matraca Berg, Oscar nominee Allison Moorer, and Americana sensation Hayes Carll, who also wrote Lee Ann Womack’s Grammy-nominated “Chances Are.”
Then he headed into the studio in both Los Angeles and Music City. So far, the man with a mantle full of Entertainer of the Year trophies is pleased with how things are progressing.
“There’s a moment you feel a record grab hold, and take shape,” he reflects. “You can have great songs and not have an album. You can have a killer record that won’t move people on the radio. The idea is to balance both, then hopefully create something that does both, that also says something as a whole. I think we’re on our way.”
Kenny plays a couple dates this month, before headlining the ACM’s Party for a Cause next month in Las Vegas. He kicks off his Spread the Love Tour April 23 at Auburn, Alabama’s Jordan Hare stadium with Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Old Dominion.
