Authorities are investigating after two horses were shot and killed over the weekend northeast of Eskridge.

The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Monday morning the incident is believed to have occurred sometime overnight Friday into Saturday in the vicinity of Bradford and Mission Valley roads. The horses were used for therapy for veterans and first responders, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Sheriff Eric Kirsch says the animals were taken to K-State for forensic examination and the department is treating the incident “like a homicide. An attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us.”

The Sheriff’s Office is pledging $500 for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
