The Riley County Seniors Center is bringing a special guest to the Christmas holiday lunch.

Liz Nelson, seniors service center program director, tells KMAN the holiday lunch will take place on December 10, and following the lunch this year will be a guest speaker- Sally Newton. Nelson says Newton is a local scientist at Kansas State, but also a 2019 contestant on the Great American Baking Show.

“Prior to the show she had been practicing her bakes and bringing them into the seniors center for people to taste test and give her a little feedback.”

Nelson says the pandemic put that to a halt and since then she has been waiting for a time to bring Newton back to the seniors center. She talks more about what Newton will discuss.

“Talk to us about her experience being on a TV show, being in England, and part of this big phenomenon that’s been going on in TV for a while now.”

The holiday lunch begins at noon on December 10. Tickets are required and go on sale December 1. Tickets cost seven dollars each and can be purchased at the seniors center.

Other events taking place in December for the seniors center includes a Lunch Bunch meeting at Rockin K’s on December 3 beginning at 11:30. Nelson says following the lunch, they will take a tour of the new Shamrock Zone between Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum. The tour begins at 1PM.

Nelson also mentions that Townie Tuesday will take place December 14. The topic for the Townie Tuesday is “home videos” and they will be watching video snippets of old videos, tv commercials, and events that took place in Manhattan.

Finally, December events will round out with some Christmas music on December 17.

“A barbershop quartet called “The Charades” is coming to perform. They’ll do holiday entertainment and a little bit of sing-along. They’re part of the Little Apple Barbershop Chorus, but they’re their own small quartet.”

Nelson adds that the music starts at 1PM, following lunch.
