Trae Patton/NBCBlake Shelton has had a lot of drama in his life in the past few months, so he’s ready to dig in to some sad country songs on the new season of The Voice, premiering Monday night.

“Country music has gotten me through some of the toughest times of my life, and it also has brought me so much joy through the happiest times of my life,” Blake says. “It just, over the years has become who I am as a human being. I’m a living, breathing country song, and I’m proud of that.”

No matter what ups and downs Blake is facing in his personal life, he knows he can count on his fellow coaches, like pal Adam Levine, and the contestants on the show to help him keep his bearings.

Says Blake, “I mean, this becomes a complete family about half-way through the season. Whenever we’ve been here a long time together and we’ve seen people that we love have to go back home, but we still have others that we love, the bond becomes stronger and stronger and stronger throughout the season. “

Season nine of The Voice premieres Monday night at 8 ET on NBC.
