County officials announced on Tuesday afternoon that the ongoing Burklund/Axtelton wildfire is now considered 90% contained.

According to a press release from Riley County public information officer Vivienne Leyva, Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews although local volunteers remain on scene on Tuesday to lend any assistance.

On the Riley County side, crews from Riley and Pott Counties, the Kansas Forest Service, the Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, and Pittsburg and Garden City officials remain on scene monitoring fire conditions. No aerial support was needed on Tuesday.

Officials say that residents can expect to see smoke and even flames in the burned areas for at least a few more days. Several thousand acres of land have burned since the fire broke out last Friday.
