Riley County commissioners were updated on recent crime trends Monday morning.

Riley County Police Department Capt. Josh Kyle told commissioners burglaries have decreased so far in 2016 after trending upward in November and December.

“At the end of 2015 we did not have a good news to report as far as crime trends,” he said. “We saw a significant increase in burglaries towards the end of the year, which had a significant effect on our overall averages.

“I am glad to report that in the beginning of this year we’re not seeing that trend continue.”

Kyle said the department has been tracking violent crimes and said those trends have slightly increased, but added police like to keep the big picture in mind with those numbers.

“With Part 1 Violent Crime a lot of times that happens behind closed doors,” he said. “If we see an overall macro trend for the long term, that gives us some concern and we’ll start following up on that, but if we see spikes within certain months, it’s not something we feel as though police assets can be directed towards in any particular way, other than post-incident investigation.”

Kyle said vehicle burglaries continue to be a problem despite arrests.

In other items, commissioners approved the latest update to the Riley County Health Department HIPAA Handbook and Policy Manuel.
