The suspect in a shooting that took place in Manhattan’s Aggieville district over the summer, was in Riley County Court Monday afternoon.
Mark Self Jr., sat before a judge and jury as his defense team, along with that of the state made their opening arguments.
31-year-old Self allegedly shot 26-year-old Kevin Green of Manhattan in the 600 block of North 12th Street in May of 2015.
A second victim, 19-year-old Jeremy Caudill, sustained minor injury as a result of the incident.
Several witnesses were called to the stand in the first day of testimony – as the night of the incident that took place at Tubby’s Sports Bar, was recounted.
Former General Manager of Tubby’s, Blase Martin took the stand, where he described witnessing an incident between Self and a man he identified as Kevin Green along with several other men, from security cameras.
Martin then recalled calling the bars security team into action, at which time the fight was broken up and the men were led out of the bar by bouncers.
Self was placed in what was described to jurors as a hold, by former Tubby’s Security Manager, Tyler Davis.
Davis took the stand and identified Self as the man he helped escort out of the building the night of the scuffle and was one of several witnesses to describe hearing gunfire – the other being Jeremy Caudill.
Caudill described leaving the bar through a rear alley way with his friends.
The Ft. Riley solider says he then stopped to take a snapchat photo with his group, when they heard what he believed to be “firecrackers” – later noticing Self aiming a gun in their direction.
Caudill says he began to run and felt something strike him in the shoulder blade, breaking the skin.
The injury was later identified to have been the result of unidentified fragmentation.
Self faces charges of attempted first degree murder and has pleaded not guilty.
