Activities abound this weekend in the Manhattan area. Here’s a preview of things to do.
Everybody Counts 2019 – Douglass Community Center (900 Yuma Street in Manhattan)
The public will be able to get various free health screenings — including vision screening provided by the Lions Club — Saturday at the 8th Everybody Counts event.
Debbie Nuss is the Chair of the event, held the first Saturday in August at the Douglass Community Center. She says it first started in 2014 after the USD383 school board learned of the number of homeless children in the district.
“In January 2014 that number was approximately 250 children stating they were homeless,” Nuss said.
Dental, mental health and diabetes screenings will be among other services provided in addition to immunizations.
“The health services are only offered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.,” Nuss said.
The event in total runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but all outdoor events and games have been canceled, due to the prospect of rain showers Saturday. That includes many organizational booths, the Community Brunch and the Harvesters’ produce distribution — but the Flint Hills Breadbasket will be open to distribute breads and sweets.
The Flint Hills aTa bus has a stop at the community center at 27 minutes past the hour every hour. Free fares are available through Aug. 10 on the bus.
Stuff the Ambulance – Ogden
Riley County EMS officials will be out at Dollar General in Ogden Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. looking to stuff an ambulance full of school supplies for Ogden Elementary students. The need is great for students. Pencils, paper, backpacks, calculators, glue and much more is greatly appreciated. All donations will go directly to Ogden Elementary.
Pottawatomie County Fair – Onaga
The fair in Onaga continues through Sunday. Activities on Saturday include the swine show at 8 a.m., the sit-n-stitch from 9 a.m. to noon, the sand volleyball tournament at Leisure Land Park at 9 a.m. and the horseshoe pitching tournament at 10 a.m. in Rosefield Park.
The bucket calf show is at 1 p.m. Saturday. In addition the kids pedal tractor pull, a pie contest, root beer floats and a turtle race highlight the afternoon activities Saturday. The youth livestock sale is scheduled for 5 p.m. The rodeo begins at 8 p.m.
The fair wraps up Sunday with livestock judging beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the annual fair parade at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony takes place at 4:30 p.m. More information is available here.
Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo – Abilene
The 74th annual event opened Wednesday and continues through Saturday at the Eisenhower Park Fairgrounds in Abilene. Tickets are $13 at the gate, $7 for youths and free to kids 4 and under.
Friday night is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. All money raised at the rodeo is put into a foundation that helps support cancer patients and their families.
“Insurance kicks in but it never kicks in for things like missed work, fuel or hotel stays,” said Ruth Nicolaus, rodeo promoter.
The rodeo includes 11 of the top 15 bull riders in the nation coming out to perform. Miss Rodeo K-State Jamie Nemechek has also been participating in the fair and was part of Thursday night’s parade.
