The property tax rate paid by Manhattan residents tax rate continues to rank in the middle of the pack of comparable Kansas communities.
A Manhattan Mercury analysis of data from the Kansas League of Municipalities shows that the total tax rate that property owners have to pay here ranks 14th of the 26 first-class cities in the state. That’s the same spot it was in a year ago, when The Mercury ran the same analysis.
The property tax in Manhattan — which is the total levied by the city and county governments and the public school system — is 153.262 mills. A mill is $1 in tax for every $1,000 of assessed, taxable property value. So a house appraised at, say, $300,000 pays an annual tax bill of $5,287.54 in Manhattan to the city, county and school district governments.
