Hy-Vee is investigating after detecting a data breach on some of its payment processing systems, according to a Wednesday release.
Company officials believe that the “unauthorized activity” was centered on transactions at some Hy-Vee fuel pumps, drive-thru coffee shops and restaurants including Market Grilles. Due to differences in the point-of-sale systems, transactions at normal grocery checkout lanes, pharmacies, clinics and Aisles Online purchases are not believed to be impacted. According to the release, the investigation is in its initial stages and they have no information on which locations nor what time frame the breach occurred.
The Iowa-headquartered grocery chain operates more than 245 supermarkets across the Midwest, including locations in Manhattan and Topeka.
Hy-Vee is working with cybersecurity firms to investigate to learn more about the situation and have notified federal law enforcement and the payment card networks. Since then they have taken actions which Hy-Vee believes will stop any further related issues, writing in their release that they take “the security of payment card data very seriously.”
KMAN’s call to Hy-Vee corporate communications was not immediately returned.
They advise that customers monitor payment card statements for unauthorized use of funds and to notify your financial institution if you discover any suspicious charges. Cardholders are often not responsible for for timely-reported unauthorized charges.
