One person was injured in the two vehicle accident on K-177 on the south edge of Manhattan that blocked most of the highway for several hours Wednesday morning.  Charles Schumacher, 54, of Maple Hill was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan following the accident, reported at 6:30 a.m.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Schumacher was driving a 2012 Ford F-350 northbound on K-177, with a 2013 Freightliner semi driven by Troy Higgs, 24, of Missouri backing up across the highway. Schumacher did not see the trailer and struck it. Higgs was not injured.
Several gallons of diesel fuel were spilled on the highway which led to more traffic concerns–the entire roadway was blocked for about an hour with one northbound lane opened during the eight o’clock hour. Southbound lanes were expected to be closed for several hours.
