A 7-year-old Wamego boy has died, days after a fatal crash near Wamego that also claimed his father’s life.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed that Korbin Tinkel died Saturday from injuries sustained in the Aug. 10 crash. Korbin was a passenger in a pickup that his father, 37-year-old Randy Tinkel, was driving before being struck from behind by a semi as they were attempting to make a left turn off of Highway 24, near Airport Road.

The semi also struck an SUV that had slowed behind the pickup, sending it onto its side and the truck onto its roof. The crash also sent 36-year-old Jillian Tinkel to Wamego Medical Center with serious injuries and 2-year-old Krew Tinkel to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, where he remained in critical condition as of Monday. Jillian is an elementary school teacher at Wamego’s Central Elementary, where her son Korbin also attended. A GoFundMe page has been established for the family. As of Monday evening, donations had totaled over $40,000.

According to KHP, 34-year-old Megan Schindler, of St. Marys, was also seriously injured in the crash. The semi driver, 44-year-old Mark Stanwix, of Lecompton, was not injured.

Results of KHP’s investigation will be submitted to the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office for review.
