City crews are ready to do some spring cleaning across Manhattan next week.

Public works will be providing free curbside pickup of brush, tree limbs, and properly bagged grass clippings or leaves during the first week of April.

Andrew Lawson is Manhattan’s public information officer and encourages citizens to follow guidelines in order to ensure collection goes smoothly.

“Whatever zone residents are in, they need to have their stuff out, they really should probably have it out the day before. Crews work all day, so some places they get to early in the morning. But it needs to be on the curb, not in the street. And we asked residents to pile branches and stuff, don’t tie them together just kind of have a pile. Basically  because we have a machine that comes by and it’s got a big grappler that kind of scoops that stuff up and then dumps it so it has to be unrestrained.”

He says the city would much rather provide residents a public service than enforce codes and write tickets.

“It’s easier if you can help people than to penalize them because sometimes people aren’t around or are transient. But it comes down to it’s a public service, and we have the equipment so there’s no reason not to do that. We just have to do it in a certain timeframe because of the way that Public Works has a lot of other duties throughout the year. This is a nice time that they can set aside and have a week to just haul the stuff and then it’s taken care of, so it’s just more constructive all around.”

Spring cleanup is an annual effort from the city that has been going on for over a decade.
