Muriel was here!
Muriel, the last known survivor of the 14L-10E’s built and identical to the Amelia Earhart’s plane, made a short overnight stop in Wamego, and was on public display for a couple hours on Sunday. Muriel will continue her journey to Atchison, KS, her final destination, today.
Muriel, the name given by the owner and aviatrix, Grace McGuire, in honor of Earhart’s sister Muriel, was transported by truck from El Cajon, CA, and stopped overnight in Wamego. Muriel was transported by Wichita based trucking company, Landstar, Inc. According to the driver, Abel Meares, people along the route reacted positively to seeing the plane loaded on an extra-long flat-bed trailer. He said whenever he stopped to refuel, he usually spent extra time for people to view and take pictures. The wings were shipped separately, and are already in Atchison.
One visitor, 93 year old Glenn Woodmaney from Olathe, said he flew in a plane similar to the 1935 Lockheed Electra L-10E, during his military tour in 1944-45. He said flew in a modified B-24 and served in the Photo Mapping Squadron that held 11 cameras, but no bombs. He noted his squadron flew within 1000 miles of the island where Earhart was supposedly lost.
