One person was killed Wednesday and four others were seriously injured, following a three vehicle crash east of Wamego.

It happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. near Highway 24 and Airport Road. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a pickup carrying four individuals was eastbound on the highway waiting to make a left turn. An SUV slowed from behind as it approached the turning truck, when a semi plowed into both vehicles from behind. The SUV came to rest on its side north of the highway, while the pickup, carrying a family of four, rolled onto its top.

The crash report says the pickup driver, 37-year-old Randy Tinkel, of Wamego, died at the scene. A 36-year-old passenger, Jillian Tinkel, also of Wamego, was transported to Wamego Health Center with serious injuries. Two child passengers, aged 7 and 2 were both taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with suspected serious injuries. The crash report indicated both adults were not wearing seat belts and only the younger child was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

The driver of the SUV, 34-year-old Megan Schindler, of St. Marys was transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka with a suspected serious injury. She was wearing a seat belt.

The semi driver, 44-year-old Mark Stanwix, of Lecompton was not injured.
