The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office received a call Thursday from a citizen in the rural Manhattan area in Pottawatomie County describing a phone scam, according to release sent to KMAN from the sheriff’s office.
The citizen reported that he had received a call from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, informing him that he had a warrant for his arrest. The victim reported that a female voice identified herself as Kelly Smith and stated she was with the sheriff’s office.
The female informed the victim that he had a warrant and instructed him to turn himself in at by 2 p.m. on Friday. The female then provided him with a phone number to contact a legal support agency to find out more information. The legal support agency later stated that the victim owed over $1,500. The number provided to contact the legal support agency is believed to be a phone number associated with scams out of the state of New York.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office wants to make the public aware of this scam in our area. The caller was not a deputy with our agency, and rarely does the sheriff’s office make calls to inform citizens when they have a warrant. The sheriff’s office urges anyone to avoid providing personal information including account numbers to persons of unknown nature over the phone.
