It won’t be long before Riley County commissioners formulate the 2017 budget.

Riley County Budget and Finance Officer Johnette Shepek unveiled the 2017 budget calendar during Monday morning’s commission meeting.

“Just so that the public knows, the 2017 budget calendar can be found on the county’s website,” she said. “Right now, we’re developing the 2017 personnel budgets for all the departments in Riley County.

“So we’re busy collecting information and crunching the numbers.”

Highlights of the calendar include a discussion of baseline estimates with the commissioners on April 4 and the commission should expect total appraised values in the county determined by the appraiser’s office on or before May 2.

Preliminary budgets will be distributed to commissioners on June 2 and appropriation requests from area agencies/entities will also begin on June 2.

Budget work sessions will begin on June 27 and commissioners will approve all county budgets on July 18.

A public hearing on the budget must be available no later than Aug. 15 and the adoption of the final budget will be Aug. 25, in accordance with state statute.

In other items, Riley County Public Works Director Leon Hobson informed the commission on a box bridge replacement project on Fairview Church Road that began Monday in the northern part of the county.

Hobson said the road will be closed during construction, which should be completed by Friday, depending on the weather.
